DA VINCI TEACHER LEADER INSTITUTE HONORS
2008 GRADUATES

SEVEN ELEMENTARY TEACHERS COMPLETE
THREE-YEAR PROGRAM. INSTITUTE BOOSTS
TEACHERS' SCIENCE KNOWLEDGE, ENCOURAGES INQUIRY TEACHING.

Seven elementary teachers graduated recently from the
Da Vinci Teacher Leader Institute - the Da Vinci Science Center's signature professional development program.

The 2008 graduates are the second group of teachers to complete the three-year training course. Created in 2004, the Da Vinci Teacher Leader Institute works to increase elementary teachers' science knowledge, leadership skills, and ability to teach with the inquiry method.

Independent evaluators have reported that elementary student performance in science improves significantly when their teachers participate in Teacher Leader Institute programs. Pupils of institute teachers scored "well above" the proficiency level in creating their own science notebooks. The study also shows that institute teachers made significant gains in their personal science knowledge and were twice as effective in implementing recommended teaching techniques as colleagues who did not participate in institute programs.

The 2008 graduates, recognized permanently as Da Vinci Fellows, are:

- Theresa Lohr, St. Paul School, Diocese of Allentown

- Valerie Marcantonio, Forks Elementary School, Easton Area School District

- Carole Ondrovic, Seton Academy, Diocese of Allentown

- Karen Shear, Jefferson Elementary School, Allentown School District

- Judy Villari, Forks Elementary School, Easton Area School District

- Kristin Zavar, Donegan Elementary School, Bethlehem Area School District

- Daria Zellner, Forks Elementary School, Easton Area School District

Teachers interested in joining the Da Vinci Teacher Leader Institute this summer can contact Tara Broczkowski, Da Vinci Teacher Leader Institute manager, at 484.664.1002, Ext. 105. Allentown School District teachers who are accepted will also receive a cash stipend. Graduate credits through Cedar Crest College and state Act 48 hours are also available.
