DA VINCI SCIENCE CENTER SHOWCASES HOW
SCIENCE WORKS IN THE LEHIGH VALLEY

News Date
April 24, 2010

The Da Vinci Science Center is showcasing science from the Lehigh Valley and beyond during its Science Works 2010 celebration. The two-day event began Saturday and will continue Sunday afternoon.

Highlighted by the Center's 12th annual Science Hall of Fame Awards Saturday night, the two-day Science Works event includes a sneak peek at an experimental NASA "Hopper" craft developed at Lehigh University; an appearance by former Astronaut Winston Scott, the second African-American to walk in space; and displays of authentic moon rocks and Lehigh Valley inventions.

Science Works 2010 also celebrates the space flight experience and commemorate the 20th anniversary of the launch of the Hubble Space Telescope. Astronaut Winston Scott - the 2010 Science Hall of Fame Keynote Speaker and second African-American to walk in space - and Astronaut Terry Hart are shared their adventures with visitors on Saturday. Troy A. Thrash, executive director and CEO of the Da Vinci Science Center, also presented a retrospective of the Hubble Saturday drawing from his experiences supporting the telescope's work earlier in his career.

The Da Vinci Science Center also displayed authentic moon rocks and soil on loan from NASA Saturday and will display them again on Sunday.

Visitors on Sunday will be able to check out the experimental NASA "Hopper" craft developed by Lehigh University to replace the space agency's planetary "rover" vehicles. The project is led by former Astronaut Terry J. Hart, who now is a professor of practice in Lehigh University's P.C. Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Science.

Additional presentations by Center partners - including Lehigh Valley Grand Prix, PPL, Full Circle Training at the Coliseum Gym, and Olympus America - will demonstrate science's meaningful presence throughout the regional economy.

Sunday's programs also will include an Inventors' Showcase from 1-4 p.m. Inventors from the greater Lehigh Valley region - including Science Hall of Fame award winners Billy Schopf and Vincent Mattiola - will show off their creations for visitors. Inventions will include Billy's wind-powered generator for vehicles, Vincent's bioresorbable monitoring system for detecting irregular heart activity, a suspension saddle system for horseback riding, a dog water bowl that refills itself automatically, and a pumpkin illumination system.

Olympus BioScapes - a traveling exhibition of images from the Center Valley-based company's 2009 digital imaging competition - also will be displayed throughout Science Works weekend at the Da Vinci Science Center. Olympus BioScapes will remain at the Center through May 23.

The annual contest recognizes the world's finest microscopic images of human, plant, and animal subjects captured through light microscopes of any magnification and any brand. Selected images from Olympus BioScapes Competitions travel throughout North America for display. The 2006 and 2008 Olympus BioScapes exhibits have been shown at the Da Vinci Science Center.

All Science Works events except the Hall of Fame dinner and awards program are included with paid Da Vinci Science Center admission. Admission is $11.95 for adults; $8.95 for children ages 4-12, seniors ages 62 and up, and military members and veterans; free for toddlers ages 3 and under.
