Spring 2010 Homeschool Classes

GRADES 1-2: CHEMISTRY AND PHYSICS
PART ONE: BALANCE
Wednesday, January 27, 2010

Students will be introduced to counterweights, levers, and fulcrums. Students will complete several balance challenges, including balancing the instructor. Students will discover numerous ways to balance two-dimensional shapes. Students will observe changes in the way an object is balanced by adjusting the counterweight.

PART TWO: SPINNING MOTION
Wednesday, February 24, 2010

Students will observe objects, like tops and zoomers, which turn on a central axis and exhibit rotational motion. Students will discover different ways to produce rotational motion. Students will explore spinning colors mixing and create a magic spinner. Students will change the mass and shape of twirlers and see the affects as they spin through the air.

PART THREE: LIQUIDS
Wednesday, March 31, 2010

Students will observe the properties of several different liquids. Students will investigate how liquids pour, flow, and take the shape of their container. Students will experiment with translucent and opaque liquids, and compare how different
liquids move when they are shaken, swirled, turned upside down, and rolled.

PART FOUR: SOLIDS
Wednesday, April 28, 2010

Students will observe the properties of several different solids. Students will explore the strengths of different solids by crushing them under compression and design their own towers to test. Students will spin, shake, and roll several bottles
of different solids to observe how the particles move.

PART FIVE: LIQUIDS AND SOLIDS
Wednesday, May 26, 2010

Students will experiment with mixing together different solids and liquids. Students will use a solid and liquid to create a gas. Students will learn to separate water from a mixture and observe what happens when liquids and water are mixed. Students will identify a mystery substance by testing various solids and liquids.

PA ASSESSMENT ANCHORS
S4.A.1.3.1 Observe and record change by using time and measurement.
